BILLINGS TO SPEARFISH--DAY 3

This is the monument atop the mass grave of those brave soldiers who died with George Armstrong Custer at the Little Bighorn. We spent most of our afternoon yesterday at the site. It was obviously sacred ground, not only because of the 7th Calvary but nearby is a national cemetery for others who gave their lives. We were so amazed by the site! It extends for miles, literally. We spent 45 hot minutes listening to a mesmerizing park ranger who spun out the tale of the Little Bighorn. We waited breathlessly for Indian warriors or calvary soldiers to come charging over the hill. We were also astonished at the number of visitors in the nearly 2 1/2 hours that we spent there.
This is the memorial to the Indian warriors--friend and foe--who died there as well. About 260 Calvary died, but the actual count of Indian dead is unknown because they took the bodies away.

This is part of the markers which lie at the very site of the Last Stand. If you look closely, you'll see a marker which is black and has a flag beside it which is Custer's. His remains are actually buried at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, DC.

After leaving the Little Bighorn, we drove to Spearfish, South Dakota. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous! We travelled in the northeastern corner of Wyoming through Sheridan and Gillette and then to Spearfish. We saw lots of antelope and a few buffalo. Believe me, there's lots of endless miles and almost non-existent rest stops!
Today we're headed for Mt. Rushmore (just an hour away), Crazy Horse Statue, Deadwood, and Sturgis and then parts east which, touristy speaking, doesn't look too interesting. Have a great day.
