Doing the Cog

A few years ago, my sister Julia and her Tom made a harrowing drive to the top of Mt. Washington which they described to us in some detail. Mt Washington is in New Hampshire and, at 6,288’, is the highest point in New England. Of course, my beloved has insisted that we should take the same drive. A few weeks ago, while visiting Windsor, VT, we learned from a waiter that there is a cog railway to take passengers to the top of the mountain. Garth loves railroads and has regaled me with tales of his trip on a narrow gauge in Durango which “we” needed to visit, so he jumped at the chance to ride a cog. Riding a train to the top of a mountain was not my idea of fun and I dreaded it about like I dreaded the Vermont winter. Neither came close to my dreary expectations. In fact, on Saturday, we rode The Cog and it was an experience of a lifetime.

We love New England. We've taken to heart our mission president's advice to "see the mission". This is the second mountain which we've stood atop--the other one in Maine. It is exhilirating to look in every direction and see God's handiwork. Nothing manmade can equal it. No picture can capture it. No matter the circumstances, such glimpses affirm the great goodness of our Heavenly Father.
